RentMyStay was founded by a young and energetic team of Kiran Nagarajappa, Rakesh Kamble, and Nanjunda.
Kiran with 12 years of experience in Product management, Product design and software development has worked on Large Enterprise applications, Algorithmic Trading and Big Data during his tenure at Hewlett Packard, Goldman Sachs, Reach360 and SureWaves.
While, Rakesh Kamble with over 11 years of experience in Product management, Product designs, Product transformation and Software development was associated with Wipro, Unisys and Satyam. Nanjunda, being the youngest founding member is from a business family and has great zest for online marketing.

The Idea and starting phase
While a casual stroll with Kiran, Rakesh expressed his wish to rent a place for 2-3 months to stay closer to his under construction house to oversee the final finishes, but realized how difficult it was to get home for such a short-term. Kiran also recollected that he had the same need when he was on a sabbatical in Kodaikanal and this sparked the idea of RentMyStay.
They wanted an innovative name that could reflect both the Owners’ and Tenants’ perception toward the venture. Thus, the title RentMyStay came into existence which bears binary meaning. For the owners, it means that they could rent their space and for the tenants it implies that they can rent their stay.

Market and Competition
Diving into the vast sea of rental market was the real challenge for RentMyStay. And to stand out among all the players demanded a placard of innovation. To achieve this, the founders brought in the approach of flexi rentals without hefty advances.
Apparently, people now rent homes for any duration and stay closer to their work places through RentMyStay. The agony of commuting from one end to another end in a bustling city is eliminated. Guests book homes for a couple of days, weeks or months without any restriction.

RentMyStay works with the owners on an exclusive arrangement and enables them to rent homes on flexi rentals by eliminating the traditional long-term leasing system. As a result, owners earn more rental income whereas, guests save 40% or more compared to hotel stays. The effective cost at their platform is much lower than service apartments or hotels. The cost being inversely proportional to the duration of stay is another added advantage.

Competition is from players such as Airbnb, local service apartments. But according to them, being the first player to provide homes with various amenities and malleable leasing rates gives them an edge over other online platforms.

Challenges and road ahead
The struggle during initial days of business has taught to be more frugal, focused and follow the lean approach, shares the team. The group also prides itself in finding revenue sources in a short span and turning the organisation into a self-sustaining one. The effort to locate a couple of investors for the expansion of the business is still under progress.
The group admits, RentMyStay was not just a start-up experiment. It was their dream project, their passion for life. Giving up a professional job, convincing the loved ones for just an abstract idea was not effortless. Despite of all the hindrances endured, they pursued their objective.

Thoughts for aspiring entrepreneurs
The team believes that success of a start-up is not based on a great idea but on execution. One should not strive to mould a perfect idea. The idea engrave itself and transcends to the next level only when the team builds a prototype and talks to a lot of customers.
They conclude with a simple note, Apple weren’t the first to create a smart phone. Google wasn’t the first search company. They all just did it better than the competitors.

The way we consume food has changed entirely and this has increased ‘ordering in’ food from various restaurants and apps. Ordering food comes with its own set of questions like, what to eat? Where to order it from? Will it be healthy? Will it be tasty and inexpensive? Eatlo was started to solve exactly this problem and wants to become the one-stop solution to all these important questions. The menu is new each day to avoid boredom around having the same food day in and day out. The food is home-cooked by pro chefs and therefore, is both delicious and healthy. Prices are reasonable and won’t burn a hole in your pockets.

Eatlo was launched in Bangalore with lunch deliveries on Dec 15th 2014 and within this short time period, they’ve acquired an impressive customer base, serve about 1200 orders daily, have started serving evening snacks and drinks. The team, that is about 50 member strong team, 120 including delivery boys, is growing very fast and has helped expand their service to many locations across Bangalore, including Koramangala, Sarjapur, HSR Layout, Domlur, Bellandur, Indiranagar, Bomanahalli, and Venkatapura.

Eatlo closed their second round of funding around 3 months back from Zishaan Hayath of Powai Lake Ventures, Abhishek Goyal of Tracxn Labs (backed by Sachin Bansal and Sahil Barua) and are now using the money to invest in technology and scale their operations across Bangalore. The investment means overnight expansions in all aspects, they are about to launch in MG Road, Vasanth Nagar, ITPL, Jayanagar and hiring across teams for a lot of job profiles. Previous (angel) investors include Deap Ubhi (founder of Burrp, early investor in Tiny Owl & Housing), Abhishek Goyal (founder of Tracxn, angel investor in Dehlivery) and others. The whole point is to make ‘ordering in’ food hassle-free, easy, quick and reasonable. Eatlo does not want to become a once-in-a-week alternate for ordering in for people, instead, want them to happily order daily from them. They have around 5-6 veg and non-veg options across homely, healthy and interesting categories everyday and the pricing is simple and reasonable to ensure that the user thinks only about the food rather than worrying about comparing prices.

Eatlo already has lots of users using their Android app and they’ve also launched their iOS app recently, which is quickly gaining popularity among users. When asked about how they work, Sai Priya, co-founder said, “We aim to place food on your table just by a click. The way we work is very simple and efficient; we handpick food from various chefs and dispatch it from various centers. All the customer has to do is choose the location, place an order in 2 clicks and enjoy great food in just 20 minutes.”

“Although, we’ve tied up with professional chefs, each dish is pre-sampled and sampled again on the day of it being served. We take taste, health and hygiene seriously and each dish is served only after it meets our quality standards. We want to become a one-stop solution for all your food woes.” says Rahul Harkisanka, co-founder. They are going to get a centralized kitchen where the food will be prepared and dispatched to distribution centers in different areas which will ensure cost-effective efficient delivery. Eatlo was founded by two people who are true foodies and wanted to bring technology and food together to revolutionize the way we order food. Another interesting thing is that they use Data Science to avoid wastage of any kind and routing technology to make their service super efficient and lightening fast. A lot of care is undertaken to predict food preferences, what dish works out for whom, etc. They also plan the menu for a week extensively so that they don’t repeat any dish for a long time. Now, that’s caring for customer satisfaction! They have already started the process of patenting this technology.

When questioned about how they would handle the expansion Sai Priya, says, “Even with all the expansion across, meals, menu, locations and getting our own centralized kitchen, we will never compromise on the quality of food, ingredients, service and everything else. Also, we will never cut corners as we can avoid wastage by using technology.” On being asked about how they compare with other players, Rahul says, “We are working towards making Eatlo the only brand when it comes to great food; we have a variety of menu which changes each day. We use the best of the ingredients and our chefs cook with care. Unlike restaurants, you won’t see a layer of oil floating over our gravies. For vegetarians, our menu is not restricted to Paneer, Rajma and Chhole, we serve a whole variety of dishes, like Aloo Methi, Gobi Matar and even those like Karela, Tinda, etc. We serve some specialties that are authentic in flavours like Litti Choka, Gatte ki sabzi, Gongura Chicken, Vangi bhaat, Tamarind rice etc. We do not repeat our dishes soon so our customers don’t get bored with the same kind of food. Our food is prepared by chefs and not ordered from caterers or a restaurant, which makes our customers experience a fine dining of tasty food without feeling guilty.”

Rahul hails from Jaipur and is an IITB 2006 graduate. After graduation he worked at Procter and Gamble (PnG) for 2 yrs where he helped set up their Factory at Baddi. He has MBA from IIMA batch 2008-2010 and was heading Operations & HR at Urbantouch.com & Fashionandyou.com as VP, Ops. He also had a brief stint at the consulting firm A.T. Kearney but quit to pursue his entrepreneurial passions. Prior to founding Eatlo, he headed Strategy and Product at Freecharge.com. Setting and scaling up Operations via Technology is one of his core strengths.

Sai Priya Mahajan
Sai, originally from Chandigarh, is an IIT Bombay 2011 graduate (Dual Degree Elec engineering) and has worked at 2 technology startups (Urbantouch.com, mygola) earlier. Sai joined Urbantouch early on and worked across the Category and Operations department. She helped scale the startup from 10 to 250 employees before it was acquired in 2012 by Fashionandyou.com. At mygola she worked across the Analytics and Product functions. She also paints professionally and put up an exhibition of her watercolor paintings last year.

StrollUp was started by 3 friends (Abhishek, Ankur, Siddharth) from IIT-D and DCE in Jan, 2014. They launched their website in Sept, 2014 for Delhi. In the next 3 months, they added category Movies, launched in Bangalore and reached their first 1000 users.

Who doesn’t loves a good cup of coffee? But how accessible is it on daily basis? Not much really. This is what was bugging the founders of dropkaffe and they went ahead to do something about this. The founders Chaitanya, Rakshit and Lakshmi are passionate coffee drinkers and have worked and lived for over a decade in the U.S working in various roles (corporate CXO, investment banking, management consulting).

They moved back to India to start an online education company, SmartOn Learning, based in Bangalore & New York, which is recognized as one of the best edtech start-ups globally and part of the prestigious TechStars Accelerator program in 2014. This is their second start-up together. What unites them in this venture is their common love for coffee, passion to solve simple but real problems and experience in building & scaling startups. 

The Story
DropKaffe was the result of solving their own issue with coffee. Being coffee lovers and big time consumers, a much needed coffee at work was always challenging. The problem got accentuated specially when they wanted coffee for takeaway. It was always a tough choice to decide between the decision to carry a cup of coffee back to desk that would burn the hand/spill over or to stand on the street-side and gulp it as if it was their last cup of coffee, ever. They even tried hiring a runner who fetched their coffees but quickly realized that it was neither economical nor sustainable. All in all, frustrations grew and intent to resolve their coffee troubles became firmer. They started researching for solutions and realized nobody delivers coffee – not Bangalore, not anywhere in the world!

So, they started digging deeper. In a day & age where e-commerce has a solution from anything and everything starting from food to your dirty laundry it was almost baffling that nothing existed for coffee, which is the 2nd most consumed beverage after water.

Discussions with hundreds of coffee goers confirmed that the coffee vending machines at office were not the solution for a good cup of coffee either. They got convinced that there is a great unmet need that can be solved. That’s when DropKaffe was born!

They wanted a name that was catchy, memorable and speak clearly of what they are. As they deliver/drop the products to you and they are serving coffee as well as other cafe style food, the name DropKaffe was derived.

When asked about the current industry status, the founders informed us that the total dining out market is projected to be $78 billion by 2018. The QSR and Café market which they fall under is projected to be at $12.5 billion.

Our vision is to be the market leader in the online coffee delivery market.

Provided that they are the only only coffee and beverage delivery service in India, it looks like they are moving very well towards their vision. The company is currently bootstrapped. As per the founders, they want to create a coffee cult in India. All their online and offline marketing efforts are channelized in that direction.

Challenges
Although DropKaffe offering sounds simple, a lot has to be done to get it right and delight the customers. They are investing in every aspect of the customer experience beginning with where they source tbe coffee (they have both domestic as well as international coffee varieties), how they make the coffee (they brew their own coffee with the help of experts) and the process of delivering it. Getting a great tasting hot cuppa delivered on time – consistently day after day is the trick. In their own words:

“We are obsessed about our customer delight. Enjoying a good cup of coffee suited to your taste at your convenience on the go is one of the simple pleasures of life. We want to deliver that and will go to whatever extent that’s needed. For example, we realized that you don’t get the typical coffee stoppers / stirrers in India. Even Starbucks imports them from China. We didn’t want to start our service till we have that figured out; so we imported them from the U.S. till the time we find a partner who could custom manufacture of these for us locally. We believe, DropKaffe is much more than just coffee!”

With almost all businesses going online there is a certain requirement for the logistics industry. The customer had to face a lot of difficulties while transporting materials from one city to another. The entire process is being handled manually with the customer going from transporter to transporter to look for the best possible option available. Also the choice was limited to the capacity of the customer to work. The service providers had to wait for customers all day long to get some work.

The solution to this problem lies in a new venture namely Trucksuvidha.com. Trucksuvidha.com is an emerging company whose main aim is to link logistics with E-commerce and they are moving forward with their aim. This site is for the needs of the transport industry.

How it started

Amit Punaini is a businessman by profession who is always passionate about new ventures. His vision to make the use of technology to uplift the society led to this venture. With an aim to organize the unorganized sector he believes that change is for the good and we should adapt to it. Ishu Bansal is a software engineer by profession who has a vision. A vision to own a startup that make a difference. As it is said like minds think alike, he with his technology and Amit with his resources and set on a path to bring about some change for the greater good of the society. Both come from good industry background but they felt that it was not their calling. One fine day, both were discussing the problems faced by truck drivers and decided to solve it by organizing things using web technologies. This is when TruckSuvidha came into being.

With this project they were targeting the logistics industry. Trucks was center behind the entire idea. This industry faces a huge gap and truckers are the people who face a difficult time most of all.

“One evening over a cup of tea my friend suggested that this is a Suvidha for the transport industry (Suvidha in Hindi meaning facility or help), so why not name it TruckSuvidha, as we felt this would particularly help truckers.” – mentions Amit when asked about the name of startup.

Market and Vision

After 9’o clock when you travel on national highways, you see a lot of trucks. Now add those to the ones going all across India. This is the actual size of the market that TruckSuvidha is targeting. The future would be you get to sit home and book a truck as per your choice to move stuff for moving a household.

I want to bring the entire transport industry online.

TruckSuvidha comes with a unique concept in the domain, ease of use and the a lot of information. This is a unique concept combined with a lot of field work and a host of people ready to be a part of it. Under current marketing strategy, they are working on facebook and twitter communities. Recently they have joined hands with Pranbandhan, an annual fest of IIT Kanpur. “As of now we are still in the implementation stage, once we launch the site we will identify the competitors and work accordingly.” – says Amit when asked about the competition in the sector.

As of now, the company is self-funded by the two partners. They are open to sponsors and franchise option as of now.

Revenues and Marketing

The revenues and margins are good for the logistics industry. Truck Suvidha would be earning through advertisements, packages etc. As of now breakeven would take at least 2-3 years. With over 22000 likes on their facebook page and over 5000 twitter followers, they are looking to engage people over internet and make them aware of the facilities available on the portal. Also, they have just booked a stall at IITF for 2014 to be put up at Tech Mart introducing this concept of logistics industry online.

Challenges and Road Ahead

When asked about the challenges int he journey, they sum it up as:

“I won’t say it has been an easy journey. The thought of a startup crossed my mind a thousand times but it took almost 2 years, convincing my distant brother to be a part of this, a resignation, lot of field work which sometimes led to frustration in the end, effort, time, and money. Also, a visit to the Azadpur Mandi and interacting with the people who actually are in this industry led us to believe that we are on the right path. We can bring about a change to their lives. At that moment it was an eye opener. I guess this sums it up in a brief way.”

For the aspiring entrepreneurs, their message is to believe in themselves, as its never too late to start.

However, he could not find any luck and the most disappointing part was the fact that he could not know the status of his job search. They say ‘You are born alone and die alone’ but in-between these two states of life, we engage day in and day out with many people in different settings, across different mediums to be rightfully termed ‘social creatures’. On this path between the two extremes, it is not about what we are doing rather who we are doing it with, that makes our experience enjoyable. Whether at school, college, office, club or in a locality, on various occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, farewells, parties, housewarming, baby showers, weddings to activities like attending movies, events and so on, we like doing things in a group making our experiences more social.

The Idea

Often daily life problems are picked up by opportunists and turned into a useful product. Something similar can be said about the duo of Ankit Singh and Rohit Taneja who are working towards eliminating the use of ugly phrase “you owe me”. Ankit Singh completed his studies from Delhi College of Engineering and went on to Faculty of Management Studies. He previously worked at Intuit and P&G. Rohit Taneja, product designer at MyPoolin comes from a solid background of IIT Delhi and was working for Sony in Japan.

They came up with the interesting product – MyPoolin which signifies their pool of friends or group of friends with whom they interacted with on a day-to-day basis. These may be colleagues collecting money for a gift, buddies settling their dinner bills or even neighbors settling their festivities collection.

How it works

To make our experiences social and enjoyable, we pool in money where usually, a single person in the group would take the lead, collecting money from all and accounting the money flow. This often leads to uncomfortable “You owe me” situations where one person chases others for their share. Tabulating all payee on mundane, non-automated spreadsheets, painstakingly updating them and the nightmarish net-banking with never-ending digits ranging from account number to IFSC to MICR to card block and what not codes and imagine registering 15 net banking payee, this was a perfect recipe for something that has been too much of a hassle and was not something to look forward to. It is always ghostly to go to work after an all-night without breakfast. This was what Udit and Taru experienced on most of the days. Both of them had a hectic schedule and they had to miss breakfast on many occasions. However, their love for food made them crave for some appetizing dishes. Hence, Udit and Taru started Eatongo in order to combat the rampant breakfast woes of Bengaluru.

They both believe that a sumptuous breakfast/brunch not only helps to bolster energy, but it also makes one feel fresh and active. Udit, who previously worked with Del Monte and Global Green Company wanted to innovate food packaging and that certainly speaks for Eatongo’s eye for details when it comes to packing breakfast or brunch. Taru has a thing for Technology and that is a reason why Eatongo’s website offers multitude customizable food plans and delivery options to customers. Eatongo’s mission is to make Bangaloreans eat healthy, palatable breakfast and brunch. As the name says, Eatongo provides quick delivery so that customers will never miss their meals. Eatongo has expert cooks which are guided and trained by Chef Gregory Lobo, to prepare toothsome, salubrious and fresh meals as soon as you place an order. As of now, Team Eatongo has eleven members and all of them are equally passionate about providing quick service for healthy food. Eatongo is active on most of the social media channels so that customers can easily get foodies updates and health related tips. Eatongo delivers across Indiranagar, CV Raman Nagar, Domlur, Kodihalli, Thippasandra and Jeevan Bheema Nagar, the Team is thriving to expand their delivery areas in Bangalore.

Road Ahead

Currently there are no direct competitors in the industry. There is only 1 company which is doing only breakfast and that also fixed single menu changing everyday. Eatongo provides a complete menu starting from Rs. 50 to Rs. 230, where customer can choose what he wants to eat.
“We want to become the biggest breakfast company of India. We will be opening multiple kitchens in Bangalore to cover South Bangalore, where the most of the corporate crowd resides” – says Taru when asked about their expansion plans.

If you have booked a train ticket and/or laughed at IRCTC jokes, you might be aware of the waiting ticket scenario in India. A delay of merely few minutes on the day of ticket opening will result in a waiting ticket for you. And this is not the case with the Tatkal ticket, rather in a normal reservation which starts well in advance(2 months). A waiting ticket is only confirmed few hours before the journey, which in a lot of cases is not very convenient time to know. If you have a long route or urgent journey, you have no alternative other than costly bus or flight tickets.

So when you are in a situation when you have just the wait listed tickets available, how do you decide if you should take it or not. If not, should you go with Tatkal or try another modes of transport?

Say hello to ConfirmTKT. It predicts chance of train ticket confirmation based on historical data. Then you can access risks and plan your trip accordingly. And it won’t leave you at the predictions itself, but you can get alternatives as well based on various options available for the route.

A second shot at entrepreneurship, ConfirmTKT was founded by Sripad vaidya and Dinesh Kumar Kotha, two former IBM guys. Sripad is a travel freak and pure analytics guy and he handles all analytics and operations at ConfirmTKT. While Dinesh is a hardcore techie who can build anything and everything, no matter what the platform and technology.

The Idea and starting phase

Playing around with problems is not a new zone for Sripad and Dinesh. They built their first product to give an estimated fare for autos so you can negotiate with auto drivers. It was launched in the form of android app called Meterup (link) in 2011. The product didn’t kick off as well as both expected. But they moved on from auto to train. And this time it was not just about price of ticket. There was a certain discomfort attached to travelling by train.

“We faced the same problem which every Indian train traveler faces . Whenever we plan to travel from Bangalore to Hyderabad (to our native places), we would see long waitlist” – says Sripad. They had 2 options:

  • Either travel by train (if you are lucky enough to get a ticket)
  • Start shelling out huge amount of money on the buses . Which would be some where 5-10 times of the train fare during the peak season / weekends .

They started by observing the ticketing trends for train (Bangalore Express-12785) which they usually took. And surprisingly they saw a trend in the way booking and cancellations happen . To try out they started booking the waitlist tickets based on the observation and mostly  both travelled with Confirmed ticket .

“So at the point we thought of building a software which can predict and help is common user” – says Sripad.

By late 2012, the partners had started writing software to accumulate data for analyzing viability of waiting tickets confirmation. They came up with the name ConfirmTKT, which tells the whole story of what they were doing.

How it works?

They offer two main services:

  1. Predicting the confirmation chances of waitlist tickets based on the past trends.
  2. Discovering all the alternate options to travel on a train . When the ticket is in waitlist.

The intelligence behind the ConfirmTKT PNR predictions is very close to how humans think.

“We humans predict and act on the future based on past experiences. In the similar way ,ConfirmTKT algorithm analyses the past ticketing trends and predicts your ticket confirmation chances.” – mentions Sripad.

ConfirmTKT maintains confirmation thresholds for every train and predict the ticket confirmation chances based on them. It is designed in such a way that it learns while predicting. So, the more we predict the more accurate and efficient we are. In fact, ConfirmTKT prediction algorithm is highly efficient and trusted. It has been thoroughly tested on about 2500 trains and achieved an overall accuracy of 88%.

However, they never stopped innovating. Even though they started predicting the trains ,there were some tickets for which confirmation chances are very low (ConfirmTKT status shows “No Chance”). The number of ticket which would end up in waitlist is huge. After a deep analysis of the train data, they designed an algorithm which would start exploring all the possible quota`s available on a train to discover an alternate way to travel. Below is an info-graphic which is self-explanatory.

Industry and Competition

It huge daily market in India. Almost out of 2.2 million people who book train tickets, around 7.8 lakhs would be in waitlist. They will be looking for predictions and they are the ones benefiting from this service. Currently, there is a very small number of other websites which does the same.

ConfirmTKT brings its unique algorithm and it never ever changes the predictions. This has been the key for their success till now . Also apart from predictions they have developed a ticket discovery algorithm, which will find all the possible ways of getting a confirmed ticket by utilizing all the quota`s available on a train.

Challenges and Road Ahead

“We worked almost for 2 years to develop our algorithms and launch it to public. Difficult task was to get the huge data, analyse it and build a logic which is useful to a common man.”

The company is still bootstrapped. They are looking for investors to fund this and take it to next levels.
